Container volumes transported via the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway increased nearly sixfold in 2025 compared to the previous year, according to Georgia’s Economy Minister Mariam Khvrivishvili.
Speaking at the railway’s official opening ceremony, Khvrivishvili said the BTK route has become a key transport corridor linking Europe, Central Asia, and China, amid growing demand for reliable and secure trade routes.
She noted that container shipments from China and Kazakhstan through Georgia rose by 33% in 2025, while BTK traffic growth highlights the corridor’s expanding role within the Middle Corridor network.
The minister added that the railway is a central part of Georgia’s broader transport strategy, alongside the Anaklia deep-sea port, railway modernization projects, and the East-West Highway. Since entering trial operations in 2017, the BTK railway has transported more than 1.8 million tonnes of cargo and nearly 90,000 containers.
