Georgia's Roads Department is carrying out a major upgrade of the Pshaveli–Abano–Omalo road, with rehabilitation works already underway on a 49.18-kilometer section of the 72-kilometer route connecting Tusheti.
The project has been divided into eight sections, with contracts signed for five of them. The value of the ongoing works exceeds GEL 73.7 million. According to the Infrastructure Ministry, the project will be completed in phases during 2026–2027.
The rehabilitation includes restoring the road profile, upgrading drainage systems and engineering structures, widening the road where possible, installing safety barriers, and renewing traffic management infrastructure. The first 22.5 kilometers will be paved with asphalt, while the remaining sections will retain a gravel surface due to the area's challenging terrain, with damaged segments fully restored.
The Pshaveli–Abano–Omalo road is the only road linking Tusheti to the rest of Georgia. Crossing the Abano Pass at an altitude of 2,950 meters, it is typically open for only four to five months each year because of harsh weather and difficult terrain, limiting both traffic and construction activity.
