Georgia has launched a large-scale modernization of its railway system, covering both infrastructure and rolling stock, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said at an event marking Railway Workers’ Day.
According to Kobakhidze, the plans include purchasing 50 new electric locomotives, 10 modern passenger trains and a total of 2,000 freight wagons. The railway has already purchased 200 wagons, with another 200 expected to arrive in the coming months.
Kobakhidze noted that the wagons were purchased directly from the manufacturer, without intermediaries, reducing costs by approximately 22%. The estimated savings on the first 400 wagons will total around $6 million, which will be reinvested in railway development.
