Georgia Postpones Ban on Plastic Beverage Bottles to 2031

ირაკლი კობახიძე

Georgia has postponed the ban on selling beverages in plastic bottles by four years, moving the enforcement date to February 1, 2031. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced the decision during the April 8 government meeting.

Kobakhidze noted that while reducing plastic use is important for both public health and environmental protection, the government must also consider the impact on businesses and potential effects on consumer prices. Following consultations with the business sector, the decision was made to delay the regulation.

Previously, from July 1, 2026, restaurants and cafés were set to be prohibited from serving drinks in plastic bottles. A full ban on the production, import, and sale of plastic beverage bottles (except for export purposes) was scheduled for February 1, 2027. These measures will now take effect in 2031.
