Georgia has seen a sharp increase in pistachio import prices in early 2024, driven by global market disruptions stemming from escalating tensions in the Middle East. According to official trade data, the country imported 1,124 tons of pistachios worth $9.6 million, marking an 85.2% increase in value and a 54.1% rise in volume compared to the previous year.
The average import price per kilogram has climbed significantly. In 2023, Georgia paid $7.11 per kilogram, while in January–February of 2024 the price reached $8.55, representing a 20.2% price increase.
The country’s pistachio imports remain concentrated among three key suppliers:
- United States – $8.3 million, 918.1 tons
- Turkey – $1.1 million, 123.6 tons
- Iran – $116.6 thousand, 82.9 tons
The global pistachio market has been under pressure in recent months. Bloomberg reports that Iran accounts for roughly 30% of the world’s pistachio exports, and the ongoing conflict in the region has disrupted supply chains, contributing to a sharp rise in global prices.
