Georgia’s Parliament plans to involve a leading global auditing firm in the study of food prices, according to “European Socialists” MP Ilia Injia. While the specific timeline remains unclear, the decision to include an international company has already been made.
“The decision has been made, but it requires some organization. Probably, in the near future, a company will be selected,” Injia said, avoiding precise timeframes when pressed.
The goal is to engage one of the Big Four firms (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG) to conduct an independent market study, ensuring objectivity in evaluating food pricing. The study will focus on:
- FMCG sector analysis – structural examination of the market;
- Real margins – determining actual product pricing;
- International comparison – analyzing Georgia’s market relative to other countries.
Parliamentary Commission Chairman Shota Berekashvili noted that the first phase of the study is complete, and the next stage will involve meetings with importers and distributors. The commission stresses that a comprehensive review of the price-formation chain - import, distribution, retail - is essential for identifying systemic barriers and developing solutions to support local producers.
