Tbilisi Transport Company has announced a market research tender for the reconstruction and construction of the historic cable car line in Samgori, using a Design-Build procurement method for design, cost estimation, and construction works. Mayor Kakha Kaladze highlighted that the project represents a significant step in enhancing the capital’s public transport network. Based on the research findings, a full tender will be prepared, with project completion expected within 18–24 months.

The original cable car line, built in 1986, ceased operations in 2006 due to poor maintenance and management. Studies revealed that the old engineering structures are in extremely poor condition and must be demolished. The new line will follow the same corridor, addressing population growth in Vazisubani and reducing travel times while improving access to municipal transport.

Mayor Kaladze noted that the upgraded cable car will transport at least 1,250 passengers per hour, three times the capacity of the old system, and will be integrated into Tbilisi’s unified transport network with a schedule aligned with the metro. The line aims to provide efficient, modern, and reliable public transportation for residents of the district.

The city plans to develop additional cable car lines as part of its broader transport policy, including routes connecting Sarajishvili with Zghvis Ubani and Isani with Vazisubani, leveraging Tbilisi’s topography to improve urban mobility.
