The Press Secretary of the President of Russia, Dmitry Peskov, stated that Russian authorities do not see any risks of Armenia suspending its membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). According to him, membership in the EAEU ensures economic growth, so it is in the interests of all parties to continue cooperation.
"The integration process is quite successful. It provides for accelerated economic growth. It is in the interests of all countries to continue this," Dmitry Peskov said during a press briefing when asked if the Kremlin sees any risks of Armenia suspending its EAEU membership.
He added that on the evening of May 8 in Moscow, there will be a bilateral meeting between the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, and the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan. He called it necessary and expected from both sides.
In 2024, Armenia holds the chairmanship of the EAEU. Commenting on his trip to the summit in Moscow, Nikol Pashinyan said that there are numerous problems in Armenian-Russian relations. The Kremlin has stated that the meeting between Putin and Pashinyan will be "very substantive."
BMG reported that Russia maintains its leadership in Armenia's foreign trade turnover, with a volume exceeding $7.3 billion in 2023. In January-March of the current year, the trade turnover with Russia increased by 2.4 times, amounting to $3.7 billion in monetary terms.
Meanwhile, Armenian-Russian relations are experiencing a crisis. Against the backdrop of growing tensions in relations, Armenia informed Russia through official channels of the need to withdraw Russian border guards from the Zvartnots Airport in Yerevan, which became another twist exacerbating bilateral contradictions.
