The situation with traffic congestion at the "Upper Lars" border crossing is gradually improving. Minister of Economy of Armenia, Gevorg Papoyan, announced during a press briefing following the government meeting on December 12 that the number of Armenian trucks waiting to cross the checkpoint has significantly decreased.
According to the minister, just a few days ago, there were approximately 4,200 vehicles in line, including 1,000 to 1,200 Armenian trucks. As of yesterday, the number of Armenian trucks had dropped to 700-800, accounting for both inbound and outbound transport.
However, the situation remains challenging due to weather conditions. Papoyan noted that in the event of snowfall, the number of waiting vehicles could increase sharply—from 700 to as many as 1,500 within a single day. The minister explained that part of the issue stems from technical factors: previously cleared snow, piled on the sides of the road, has narrowed the driving lanes, reducing the crossing capacity from 3-4 vehicles per minute to just 1-2.
Responding to a question about whether the situation at "Upper Lars" is connected to the recent increase in liquefied gas prices in Armenia, the minister stated that price growth is influenced by multiple factors, including logistical challenges and market fluctuations in other regions.
