Starting next year, only children who turn six by September 15 will be eligible to enter the first grade, according to Education Minister Givi Mikanadze of the ruling Georgian Dream government.
The change was announced during the presentation of the National Concept of General Education Reform. Mikanadze explained that the decision stems from challenges younger children face when entering school prematurely.
“It has become evident that children under six experience difficulties fully integrating into the learning process due to their socio-emotional development and readiness,” the minister said.
He added that the updated rule is also connected to the ministry’s broader plan to transition to an 11-year general education system.
Under the new regulation, beginning next year and for every year thereafter, children must turn six no later than September 15 to enroll in school.
The debate over school entry age has been ongoing for years, with many specialists arguing that starting school too early might negatively impact a child’s psycho-emotional development.
