The Regional Development Ministry will merge back into the Infrastructure Ministry after 18 months as a separate agency, Government Parliamentary Secretary Vakhtang Bachiashvili said. He highlighted stricter municipal procurement and technical assessment as one of the ministry’s main achievements.

According to Bachiashvili, the system covers projects financed through the GEL 400 million regional development fund. Municipal construction tenders cannot be announced without prior technical assessment by the Regional Development Ministry to ensure project quality.

Bachiashvili said the separation helped establish stronger quality-control mechanisms and advance decentralization, including the transfer of state property to municipalities for economic use.

He said accumulated experience now allows regional and infrastructure policies to be managed under one ministry, as regional development projects are largely implemented through infrastructure projects. The legislative package also provides for abolishing the State Minister for Coordination of Law Enforcement Agencies.
