Tbilisi City Hall has announced an emergency procurement worth GEL 3.367 million to repair a damaged section of the high-speed Rustavi–Ortachala highway. The works will cover the area from the Mosabrunebeli Bridge to G. Gulua Street, including rehabilitation of the embankment wall and adjacent road infrastructure. Construction is scheduled between 27 March and 27 July 2026.
According to the municipality, the Mtkvari River’s embankment structure and protective barriers have been damaged, while a 35–40-meter section of the asphalted sidewalk has cracked, showing visible fissures in multiple directions. The existing retaining wall has tilted from its vertical position and partially lost its structural function.
An assessment by the National Environment Agency found that the damage was caused by river erosion and heavy precipitation, which washed out parts of the foundation and compromised structural stability. With spring floods approaching, experts warn that the situation could worsen, threatening both pedestrian safety and the proper functioning of the roadway.
City Hall explains that early signs of geodynamic activity appeared unexpectedly, necessitating urgent action. The project will include construction of a new reinforced embankment wall based on engineering-geological and hydrological studies. Officials warn that failure to carry out the works could lead to significant municipal property damage and disruptions to safe transportation.
