A major transport infrastructure project is underway near Tbilisi International Airport, where a new bus depot is being built to serve the city’s growing fleet of 18-meter buses. The facility, with a total project cost of 60.5 million GEL, is designed to accommodate and maintain 200 articulated buses.
The construction contract was initially signed with Construction Service Ltd. on June 30, 2023, with an original completion deadline of March 30, 2025 (18 months from the start date). However, the project has since been extended: the new construction deadline is June 30, 2025, with the final contractual deadline now set for September 28, 2025.
According to the State Procurement Agency, 37 million GEL has been disbursed so far, 61% of the total project budget.
The press service of Tbilisi City Hall told BMG that construction work is currently in an active phase and the depot is expected to open before the end of the year.
The importance of the new depot is underscored by the city’s investment in a modern bus fleet. Tbilisi City Hall has purchased 160 new 18-meter buses at a cost of 259 million GEL, but only 76 are currently in operation. The reason: the existing depot in Didi Digomi lacks the space and capacity to accommodate and service the full fleet on a daily basis.
To complete the fleet, the city has also procured an additional 40 articulated buses for 66.8 million GEL, bringing the total number of new 18-meter buses to 200 units.
In total, Tbilisi’s investment in new buses and supporting infrastructure now exceeds 380 million GEL:
- Bus purchases: 326 million GEL
- New depot construction: 60.5 million GEL
Once completed, the new depot will be a key component in improving public transportation efficiency and capacity in Georgia’s capital.
